About
Improving your business through Data Driven Decisions
Not your average accountant
I understand how teams feel at the thought of yet another outside consultant coming in.
Asking them for piles of information. Telling them what to do. Not understanding the day-to-day sensibilities and realities of their work, especially in a post-covid, restore and recovery world.
Instead, my aim is to add as much value as possible. I’ll get to know the team and key stakeholders, but I’ll only ask for essential information. And I’ll get my hands dirty with the analysis and implementation as well.
I’ll attend meetings and field questions so you can focus on delivering your essential services.
“It was apparent from an early stage that Doug isn’t your average accountant. He took it upon himself to proactively spend time with each of the managers and understand how they worked. He had a really good grasp of the clinical challenges that the centres were facing.
It’s hard to explain how useful that was. It was invaluable. He became very much part of the leadership team.”
Bringing calm to chaos
A LOT of data is collected in the NHS as it is a data-driven business.
- Patient information.
- Appointment dates.
- Waiting times for diagnostics, surgery etc.
As a Senior Financial Officer at The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust, I also saw the financial data: Income and expenditure. Workforce costing. Profit and loss.
And for a lot of people numbers equal confusion. Their data is spread across so many spreadsheets and documents that it makes their work harder. It’s chaos.
When they can’t easily compare data, the numbers are effectively useless.
“Doug helps to break down the madness and bring clarity. We worked together to create forecasts that helped us predict covid numbers. It gave my team the confidence to go to our execs and managers to talk about capacity.”
Data-driven business cases get funding
When you translate the data and tell your data story effectively, you get stakeholder buy-in and spending approved.
I work with teams at every level and at every stage of the process, ensuring that:
- Internal stakeholders are reassured that you’ve exercised all due diligence Financial modelling is accurate and aligned to the business case
- External suppliers’ contracts are fully considered and don’t hold any costly
surprises - Complex data is translated into accessible and understandable snapshots and stories (that can be shared throughout the organisation and beyond)
“Doug is highly skilled and delivered a business case that was commented as ‘one of the best we’ve seen’ hence he was a key source in getting both stakeholder commitment and final approvals. His cooperation skills are excellent, and he is very professional, delivers on time and of very high quality.”
There when You need us
You won’t need me all the time.
I come in when you need me most. When your teams don’t have the capacity to take on more analysis. When you’re under more pressure. When the stakes are even higher than usual…
I’ll bring logic and clarity so you can take the best route forward. Help more people. And save more lives.
“The team was under pressure. We were short of capacity.
Doug was available as and when we needed him. Some months it was really busy. Other times it was quiet for a couple of weeks and then it kicked off again e.g., when there were questions from the board.
He was very reactive and that was helpful.”
I’ve helped to develop business cases which have secured:
- £100m – Public Sector Telephony Transformation contract
- £25m – Data Transformation Programme
- £12.5m – Electronic Patient Record (EPR) implementation programme
- £6m – Radiology workforce transformation for NHS Provider
- £7m – Radiology equipment procurement
